About Dr. Maria Montessori
&
The Montessori Method

Montessori is a method of education developed by Dr. Maria Montessori. Montessori was a one of Italy’s first female physicians in the late 1800s.
While practicing medicine Dr. Montessori became interested in education and educational theory; she questioned traditional educational methods. She closely observed children and sought to figure out what engaged them. Over the course of time Montessori refined a set of educational materials that sparked curiosity in young children, fostering their natural desire to learn. In 1907, Montessori put her educational methods into practice in Italy’s educational system, when she opened a classroom in a poor inner-city district in Rome. This was the first Casa Dei Bambini – Children’s House. Children were provided freedom to choose their own materials. Montessori observed that children thrived using these materials; they choose the material with enthusiasm. They learned concepts through repeating the work of material, until they has mastered it. The Montessori Method soon gained a lot of attention with educators, journalists and public figures. The Montessori Method soon spread internationally. There are now at least 22,000 Montessori schools in at least 154 countries around the world.

At the core of Montessori is the knowledge that children have within them an innate desire to build themselves up. If children are equipped with the right materials, in a beautifully and thoughtfully prepared environment, children will work with fervour to acquire knowledge to forge the path to towards independence. At Wildflower Montessori School you will find a fully equipped Montessori classroom. Each item that is on display on the shelf is intended to inspire the natural curiosity of children. Our role as Montessori teachers is to gently guide and support this curiosity by showing him/her each material. When the child has mastered the aim of a material we introduce something new to the child.
